Review

WhatsApp is end-to-end encrypted and provides a ubiquitous method of communication and monitoring during internships. Most people now have access to a smartphone over and above laptops and/or tablets therefore it is more likely that students, teachers and companies will have the platform required to use the tool.

With the ability to create private groups and communicate via text messaging as well as voice and/or video messaging, it provides a good method for VET organizations to keep in touch with both students and companies during an internship.

Key Strengths:

  • Ubiquitous. Most people with a cell phone have access to the platform
  • Utilises end-to-end encryption
  • Uses multiple channels including text chat, video chat, voice chat and has the ability to send attachments and files
  • Can create private groups

Key Weaknesses:

  • Not everyone will have access to data when overseas
  • Reliance on participant setting up an account if they don’t already have one, with all the potential privacy concerns that may occur (WhatsApp owned by Facebook)
